My Story

MY PASSION Welcome, my name is Despina (Desie) As a teacher, nothing brings me more joy than the sight of a student's eyes lighting up with joy after their yoga practice. Witnessing the journey of my students is a privilege. Initially, they may struggle with the basics, but as time goes on, they start to gain confidence. It's a joy to see them tackle new challenges. Every student is unique, and my teaching style reflects this. I'm committed to creating a learning environment that's tailored to each individual's needs, where they can flourish at their own pace. I believe teaching is not just about imparting knowledge. It's about inspiring change, fostering growth, and creating an environment where students can thrive. And that's a passion that never fades. MY TRAINING In 2005, I completed a 4-year Dru Yoga Diploma program, led by its founder, Dr. Mansukh Patel. Dru Yoga is a restorative style of Hatha yoga that focuses on gentle, soft movements, mudras, visualizations, and affirmations. I am also a qualified Samyama Yoga graduate, which involved an in-depth study of Raja Yoga (meditation) under the guidance of Bill Giles, the director of Samyama Yoga.
My Samyama Yoga training incorporated a wide range of techniques that enhance the benefits of classical Hatha yoga, including Meridian Yoga, Zen Shiatsu, Chakra therapy and Meditation, as taught by Bill Giles. I gained a deep understanding of how various foods impact an individual's mental, emotional, and physical health, as well as practical applications of "The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali" and teachings from the "Hatha Yoga Pradipika." This comprehensive knowledge contributes to overall well-being. Additionally, I am a trained massage therapist and have studied nutrition. My expertise in these areas further enhances my ability to promote health and wellness. MY EXPERIENCE Over the last 20 years, I have been sharing my knowledge of yoga by teaching people of all ages, both privately and at various health clubs in Canberra. My holistic approach to life has significantly improved the relationship between my body and mind, and I strive to pass this balance on to my students.
By incorporating practical yoga skills into everyday living, I encourage a more balanced and harmonious way of life. My teaching approach is tailored to each student's personal limits, ensuring they can practice safely and effectively. Many students come to class seeking relief from lower back, shoulder, and neck tension, and I take pride in creating therapeutic sessions that leave them feeling refreshed, balanced, and energized.
Drawing upon my extensive training, I design interesting, enjoyable, and therapeutic classes, emphasizing the idea that "it's never too late for improvement." This mindset encourages students to continually develop their practice and overall well-being, regardless of their starting point or age.
